Vivid characterisation really is the heart of this book. After these letters were published, Maeve left teaching and became a journalist. I didn’t think it was the end, to be honest – listening to the audiobook, I thought the audio file was corrupted.

It had its moments, but as a whole I wasn’t terribly impressed by it. However, Elizabeth’s actions at the end of the novel need closure. The plot follows two girls growing up during and in the aftermath of World War II. I was really hoping he’d change and be a gentleman and marry someone though.
