When properly exposed to the atmosphere, this steel can be used bare unpainted for many applications. If flash control is required, please specify at time of quotation or order placement. Twist tolerances for square and rectangular structural tubing shall be indicated. Note 1 — Products manufactured to this specification may not be suitable for those applications where low temperature notch toughness properties may be important, such as dynamically loaded elements in welded structures, etc.

For a complete listing of all tubing sizes produced by Valmont, please visit our Steel Tubing Product Catalog. Historical Version s – view 8a47 versions of standard. As a standard under ASTM A, electric resistance welded tubing is normally provided without removal of inside flash.
Commonly referred to as weathering steel, ASTM A Type 4 high strength, low alloy HSLA steel utilizes elements such as copper, chromium, nickel and silicon to enhance the protection and resistance to atmospheric corrosion. This standard is issued under the fixed designation A ; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.
Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. When this steel is used in welded construction, the welding procedure shall be suitable for the steel and the intended service. This specification covers standard requirements for cold-formed welded and seamless high-strength, low-alloy round, square, rectangular, or special shaped structural tubing for welded, riveted, or bolted construction of bridges and buildings and for general structural purposes where high strength and enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance are required.
Referenced Documents purchase separately The documents listed below are referenced within the subject standard but are not provided as part of the standard. Please contact one of our knowledgeable sales staff members who will assist you with any further questions regarding this specification or with your specific tubing requirements.
Tubing having other dimensions may be furnished provided such tubing complies with all other requirements of this specification. Tubing having other dimen-sions may be furnished provided such tubing complies with all other requirements of this specification. For rectangular sections, the tolerance calculated for the larger flat dimension shall also apply to the smaller flat dimension.
With the additional elements such as those noted above, the added strength of the steel itself allows for a lighter wall a874 of steel to be used than for carbon steel tubing in order to meet structural physical requirements.
ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date.
Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. It is not required however for squares and rectangles or other shapes under A The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most envi-ronments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition Note 2.
Round and shaped tubing shall meet the required tensile properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. Outside dimension tolerances for square and rectangular tubing shall not exceed the specified plus and minus tolerances. The values stated in each system may not astk exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.
ASTM A847 Pipes Manufacturer
This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. According to ASTM A, the weld seam location for square, rectangle and other special shaped tubing shall not be located within the corner radius unless specified by the customer or manufacturer.
A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. NOTE 1-Products manufactured to this specification may not be suitable for those applications where low temperature notch toughness properties may be important, such as dynamically loaded elements in welded stuctures, etc.
When this steel is used in welded construction. Chemical composition Grade Mfg. Heat and product analysis shall be performed wherein steel materials shall conform to the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulphur, and copper. NOTE 2-For methods of estimating the atmospheric corrosion resistance fo low alloy steels see Guide G or actual data. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition Note 2.
ATolerances include allowance for convexity or concavity. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. Length tolerance for structural tubing shall be in accordance with the asfm values.
Note 2 — For methods of estimating the atmospheric corrosion resistance of low alloy steels, see Guide G or actual data. ABecause of the degree to which phosphorus segregates, roduct analysis for this element is not technologically appropriate for rephosphorized steels unless misapplication is clearly indicated. Link to Active This link will always route to the current Active version of the standard.
AApplies to specified wall thicknesses 0. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, a8447 steel can be used bare unpainted for many applications. For lighter wall thicknesses, elongation will be by agreement. BIf chromium and silicon contents are each 0. Under ASTM A, the corner radius for square and rectangular tubing shall not exceed three times the corner radius.
