Nothing, not blizzards, not breaking ice, not the people out to catch her, will stop Akiak from catching up to her team. And Blake has made it easy for children to distinguish Akiak from her fellow sled dogs and to grasp both the frozen beauty and the remoteness of the 1,mile Iditarod course across Alaska.

Vivid but slightly disjointed. It is Iditarod day.

I don’t know if this was one of my favorite books from childhood, but it’s certainly one of the ones I remember the most. As a new blogger, I live for the comments because it is the only way of knowing whether my content is really connecting with anyone.

Akiak, a determined and proud dog, refuses to leave and excapes from the idiatrod and races off to catch up with her team that are ten hours ahead. Akiak has never won the race before. She has been a fierce contender, placing in the top 5 on three different occasions.

skiak As a boy he made “tons of drawings” and used up thousands of crayons. She gets away and runs the race herself until she catches up with her team a couple days later. This is her last chance. The crowd goes wild cheering for Akiak.

It’s a book that has many wonderful features.
