And that’s my main problem with this book; Stein isn’t the epoch-making writer that she believes herself to be. Another reason why this book is memorable for me!

A splendid book where we can find some historical artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Braque as well as some famous writers, Ernest Hemingway among others. Toklas isn’t a very good narrator. I don’t even know what her middle name was. The aytobiography of literary discussions between the masters of the time with seemingly unimportant everyday worries and details is a perfect combination: Both old women, lifetime companions.

As such, I wouldn’t mind a good actual biography of Autobiograpny or Toklas, as I feel all the modernist posing sought to distance itself from the reality that drove the generation of such extremes so much as to render itself less holistically interesting as a result, unless one is supremely into ritualistic tojlas at the feet of a tiny, largely patriarchal and Eurocentric congregation.

American literature, the body of written works produced in the English language in the United States. It was not terrifying it was strange. I am going to write it for you. So, I did not buy it and now I am regretting it big time.
When she dropped out of medical school because she was bored, friends pleaded with her to stay because of “the cause of women”; her reply was “you don’t know what it is to be bored”.
She had a constant exchange of ideas with people. She also painted and was a vital figure and host within the artistic world. Here’s what I know about Gertrude Stein: Our class ultimately decided that it was an amazing love letter to Alice from Gertrude.

There was nothing shy and retiring about Stein and her high opinion of herself never faltered. What’s odd is that despite being intensly self-centered and Stein being quite unlikable and the gossip being particularly dull, I quite enjoyed it – although perhaps not in the way that Stein would have liked me to have enjoyed it.

I read this in my last year of college, in an autobiography seminar.

I feel I’ve ticked off a bucket list book, but as has become customary, the construction of the bucket list is woefully misguided, to say the least. While reading it, I sometimes got the sense that it was all just a big shared joke between the two of them, and Gertrude and Alice were still off somewhere sitting together and chuckling over it all.
