The main ‘issue’ with this collection is that there are only six stories. Our editors will review what you’ve submitted, and if it meets our criteria, we’ll add it to the article. Other than the story used as a basis for Kurosawa’s wonderful movie Rashomon I was not overwhelmed with pleasure at reading these stories. Kesa and Morito is a story of adultery and murder between a couple who simultaneously despise, love, fear, and zkutagawa for one another.
Thank you for your feedback. I’m not sure how I feel about The Martyras it struck me as a sort of Japanese retelling of the Job tale, and that bible story more than most makes me extremely angry that I’m expected to buy the appeal of some all-powerful sadist dickwad in the sky.
Even this rasohmon is too bright for me, tortured by my lover as I am. View all 83 comments. For a prolific writer such as Akutagawa, a mere representation of his best works in six servings, out of the more than a hundred stories he completed, appears to be non-representative at all.
I think I’ll reserve judgment until after we’ve discussed these in our Brain Pain group.

Apparently one of the earliest works that put Akutagawa on the map, it earned a letter of praise from none other than the legendary Natsume Souseki. Towards the end of his life, Akutagawa began suffering from visual hallucinations and anxiety over fear that he had inherited his mother’s mental disorder.
Conversely, men were often represented as the victims of such women, such as in Kesa to Morito “Kesa and Morito”,in which the leading female character attempts to control the actions of both her lover and husband. All six tales in the collection show Akutagawa as a master storyteller and an exciting voice of modern Japanese literature. I found the Rashomon story rather cruel and unsympathetic.
Similarly the illustrative quotes chosen here are merely those the complete review subjectively believes represent the tenor and judgment of the review as a whole. Those who laugh at this folly are, after all, akufagawa more than mere spectators of life. Much of his work during this period is distinctly autobiographicalsome even taken directly from his diaries.

InAkutagawa’s lifelong friend Kan Kikuchi established the literary award for promising new writers, the Akutagawa Prizein his honor. Murakami Haruki’s Introduction gives a good overview of the author, and if it is also a very personal view of Akutagawa at least Murakami is one Japanese author that many Western readers can adequately relate to through familiarity with his own workmaking it easier to position his reactions than would be the case with a lesser-known Japanese author.
